A research team consisting of faculty members from the National University Corporation University of Toyama, Kanazawa University, and Kyoto University, known as the Toyama Bay Submarine Landslide Survey and Research Group, will conduct a seafloor survey in the southern part of Toyama Bay from March 26 to March 30, 2025. The survey will be carried out using the research vessel Aosagi, owned by the Institute of Nature and Environmental Technology, Kanazawa University.
Prior to this survey, the research group conducted an underwater drone investigation, which revealed the characteristics of a submarine landslide that occurred in association with the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake. According to video footage obtained from the underwater drone survey, semi-consolidated rock blocks composed of terrestrial clastic rocks, as well as fine-grained materials, were observed to have accumulated near the area where the submarine landslide is thought to have occurred.
In the present survey, these sediments will be collected and analyzed in detail to examine the physicochemical and mechanical properties of the collapsed materials, as well as the biological species contained in the sediments. Through this investigation, the research group aims to contribute to clarifying the mechanism of the submarine landslide, reconstructing the tsunami caused by it, and improving the accuracy of future tsunami predictions.
